Arsenal transfer news: Gunners plotting shock move for Tottenham defender and Manchester United target Toby Alderweireld

Arsenal are plotting a shock summer move for Tottenham defender and Manchester United target Toby Alderweireld, according to reports.

Spurs triggered a 12-month extension on the Belgian̢۪s deal at the beginning of the year after failing to reach an agreement over a new contract.

Alderweireld has emerged as a shock target for Arsenal

1

Alderweireld has emerged as a shock target for Arsenal

By taking up the extension, Spurs activated a £25million release clause which kicks in when the summer transfer window opens.

So far there have been no official approaches for the 30-year-old, though any bid that matches the release clause has to be accepted up to July 26 – two weeks before the transfer deadline.

According to The Sun, Arsenal are said to monitoring the situation of the centre-back, with the Gunners reportedly looking for cut-price deals in the market.

If the Emirates club fail to qualify for the Champions League, they could have as little as £40million to spend in the window to try and get back among the top clubs in the country.

Manchester United have also been linked with a move for Alderweireld in recent years, especially last summer, but a deal was vetoed by the club̢۪s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward due to fears Alderweireld could not play as part of a two-man defence.

Manchester City may also be willing to pounce on the defender, with injury-prone club captain Vincent Kompany turning 33 last week.

Premier League top four confirmed: Tottenham secure Champions League qualification on final day as Arsenal miss out

Tottenham avoided a final day collapse to secure a top four finish and confirm their qualification to next season’s Champions League.

The north Londoners, who earlier this week booked their place in the final of Europe’s premier cup competition, ended their campaign with a draw to finish two points ahead of Arsenal in fourth.

Tottenham ended the Premier League season with a valuable victory

Eric Dier opened the scoring at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium inside the opening three minutes, but the Toffees made a second-half turnaround to take a 2-1 lead.

Christian Eriksen popped up to score an equaliser for Spurs, however, with the game ending tied 2-2.

Arsenal’s defeat of Burnley was not enough to move them above their local rivals, as they needed Spurs to lose to have any chance of overtaking them.

Unai Emery’s side ended the season outside the top four, so have to contend with a third straight season without Champions League football.

Despite their failure to qualify for the Champions League through their league position, Arsenal can still make it should they win this season’s Europa League.

The Gunners take on Chelsea in the final later this month.

Emery needs to beat Chelsea in the Europa League final to get Arsenal back in the Champions League

Spurs will be glad to see the back of the Premier League as they have limped over the line, with just three wins in their final 12 games.

But finishing in the top four, still with the prospect of winning a first-ever Champions League, has to be regarded as a fine achievement by Mauricio Pochettino’s side given the circumstances they have come up against this season.

They have had a number of key players out injured for large portions of the season, and they did not sign a single player in either last summer’s transfer window or when it reopened in January.

Everton’s pursuit of seventh had ended last week and they face a summer of trying to find a way of breaking the top-six’s dominance.

Tottenham news: Spurs fans poke fun at Arsenal and Chelsea with hilarious Europa League chant

It’s safe to say Spurs fans were in a jubilant mood following Tottenham’s superb victory against Manchester City on Tuesday evening.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side ended City’s 14-game winning streak thanks to a late strike from Heung-Min Son to put them in a strong position in their Champions League quarter-final tie.

Fans at the north Londoners’ new stadium were understandably elated with the result – and they couldn’t resist the urge to poke some fun at London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea following the match.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has been preferred to Lichtsteiner at right-wing-back in the absence of Hector Bellerin, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in January.

And the Switzerland international wants to be playing regular first-team football to ensure he is named in his country̢۪s squad if they qualify for Euro 2020.

Lichtsteiner told Swiss publication Neue Zurcher Zeitung: “This will need time.

â€Å“The fact that I play at a top club at the age of 35 says enough.

â€Å“There have been talks [with Arsenal]. We have to see if it suits both sides.

â€Å“I want to play on a regular basis ahead of Euro 2020 but if the manager [Unai Emery] doesn’t rely on me then I’ll need to consider my future.”

Lichtsteiner played the full 90 minutes, alongside Arsenal team-mate Granit Xhaka, as Switzerland beat Georgia 2-0 in their opening Euro 2020 qualifier.

Unai Emery will have to manoeuvre in the transfer market this summer if he wants to turn Arsenal into genuine title contenders next season.. Much depends on what competition the Gunners are in. Qualifying for the Champions League would certainly give the Spaniard a boost in terms of budget, but there should be a contigency plan in place in case it's Europa League football.

Chelsea transfer ban: Can Blues sign players this summer after lodging appeal to Court of Arbitration for Sport?

Chelsea have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against their FIFA transfer ban. However, they will still not be able to sign any players this summer.

With Real Madrid seemingly set to confirm the signing of Eden Hazard for £88million in the coming days, Blues fans would have hoped the cash could be spent improving the squad.

Chelsea are unable to sign any players this summer, despite the appeal

FIFA had banned the Premier League side from signing players in February for the next two transfer windows after being found guilty of 29 breaches of regulations over transferring minors.

The governing body then rejected an appeal from Stamford Bridge last month, with a follow-up appeal then lodged to the CAS in Switzerland.

But the west Londoners may not make another signing now until next summer.

A CAS spokeswoman told Sun Sport on Friday morning: “For a challenged decision to be stayed during the CAS proceedings, a specific request to this effect must be made.

“At the time of writing, a request has not been filed in the Chelsea / FIFA matter. Accordingly, the FIFA decision remains in force.”

The process is likely to take months, with the Court explaining: “Generally speaking, CAS appeal arbitration procedures involve an exchange of written submissions between the parties while a Panel of CAS arbitrators is being convened to hear the appeal.

“Once the Panel has been formally constituted it issues procedural directions, including with respect to the holding of a hearing.

“Following the hearing, if one is held (a CAS Panel may also issue a decision based only on the parties’ written submissions), the Panel deliberates and then issues its decision in the form of an Arbitral Award.

“It is not possible to say at this time when the Arbitral Award will be issued.”

The club have offered deals to veterans David Luiz and Olivier Giroud as the clearest indication they will not make any signings this summer.

January signing Christian Pulisic can be registered by Chelsea for next season as he is a Blues player, despite having completed this season back on loan at Dortmund.
