Daniel James: Swansea winger withdraws from Wales squad following his father’s sudden death

Swansea winger Daniel James has withdrawn from the Wales squad following the sudden death of his father.

James had been named in the squad for a training camp in Portugal ahead of the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers next month, but did not travel on Wednesday.

Daniel James has pulled out of the Wales squad

Swansea announced James’ father’s passing on Thursday morning.

A statement from the club read: “Everyone at Swansea City has been saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Daniel James’ father.

“Everyone at the football club send their condolences and our thoughts are with Daniel and his family at this sad time.”

A statement from the Football Association of Wales said: “Our thoughts are with Dan James, his family and friends during this sad time.”

Wales have Euro 2020 qualifiers away to Croatia and Hungary on June 8 and 11 respectively.

James, 21, has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United in recent days, with the Premier League club reported to have agreed a £15million fee with Swansea.

In 38 appearances for Swansea last season, James scored five goals and had 10 assists.

Craig Burley, the former Chelsea midfielder and regular talkSPORT pundit, believes the Red Devils made a â€˜crazy decisionâ€™ by giving the Norwegian the top job at Old Trafford last week.

Solskjaer has given the whole club a lift since he came in as caretaker boss to replace Jose Mourinho in December.

It was a dreadful night for Man United and Solskjaer at the Molineux

But he wasnâ€™t smiling on Tuesday night, as United suffered their third defeat in four matches with a 2-1 loss against Wolves.

The result is a huge blow the clubâ€™s top four hopes, which Solskjaer had resurrected after overseeing a remarkable turnaround in form. Now, though, the wheels appear to have come off.

And Burnley believes the Premier League giants have made a big mistake.

â€œThe decision to give Solskjaer the job full-time, I think itâ€™s a crazy, crazy decision, particularly now before the end of the season,â€ he told The Sports Bar on Tuesday night.

â€œIâ€™m not just saying this now after that game, because Iâ€™ve said it before.

â€œManchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and, on the evidence of what weâ€™ve seen recently, they need a massive rebuilding job to be fighting back with Liverpool and Man City.

â€œTo give the job to someone who is so inexperienced, with a so-so managerial record become he arrived, thatâ€™s not got â€˜long-term strategyâ€™ written all over it to me, thatâ€™s got â€˜sentimental claptrap to appease fansâ€™ written all over it.

â€œManchester United have got shareholders and should have a longer-term, more clinical view of what the strategy is, rather than, â€˜Oh, Ole has done greatâ€¦â€™

â€œHe has done great. Heâ€™s picked them off the floor. They were so miserable and when he came in they were happy and they started playing better, but the air has started coming out of the balloon and thatâ€™s the concern.â€

Manchester City and England forward Raheem Sterling named FWA Footballer of the Year after winning PFA Young Player award

Manchester City and England forward Raheem Sterling has been named Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year the day after picking up the PFA’s Young Player award.

Sterling has enjoyed a fine season for Pep Guardiola’s title chasers, with his 17 Premier League goals and 12 assists firing City to within two games of winning successive league championships.

He has also emerged as a key figure in football’s fight against racism, highlighting the bias against black footballers in the wake of being racially abused during a visit to Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge home last December.

The former Liverpool forward, 24, becomes the fourth Manchester City player to win the FWA award, after Don Revie in 1954/55, Bert Trautmann the following season, and Tony Book, who shared the award with Derby’s Dave Mackay in 1968/69.

Sterling topped the poll of the 400-strong FWA members with 62 per cent, which was 100 more votes than the runner up, Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk. Van Dijk was on Sunday crowned PFA Player of the Year.

Sterling’s Man City team-mate Sergio Aguero was in third place.

Newly-elected FWA Chair Carrie Brown said: â€œRaheem Sterling is a player of style and a man of substance.

â€œMore than 70 years ago Charles Buchan, one of the founding fathers of the Footballer Writersâ€™ Association, suggested there be an award presented to the player who by â€œprecept and exampleâ€ is considered the Footballer of the Year.

Pep Guardiola has hit back at Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the Norwegian’s claim that Manchester City ‘will kick you’.

The Red Devils boss suggests his team will have to deal with tactical fouling during tonight’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer and Guardiola go head to head in the Premier League tonight

Solskjaer is not the first United manager to have claimed City might strategically foul opponents high up the pitch to prevent counter-attacks, with his predecessor Jose Mourinho having mentioned it last season.

“When we win it we have got to be ready for their aggression because they will snap at your ankles and heels and kick you,” Solskjaer said at his pre-match press conference. “They will not allow us easy counter-attacking. There will be fouls, no doubt about it.”

Guardiola reacted with surprise when this was mentioned at his own media briefing.

“Did he say that?” the Spaniard asked. “I never prepare a game in 10 seasons as a manager thinking about these kind of things, never.

“The players can talk about it better than me, the players I had at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and here.

“I know exactly what I said to my players from day one to the last day. When a player wants to attack, we have to be honest.

“Of course there is contact, there are fouls, but when it happens (it is because) you arrive late and that is why there are referees, to make yellow cards or red cards or whatever they decide.

“I prepare to do our own game, that is what I want, knowing of course the opponent, but I never said I’m going to do that to punish them or cancel them (by) making fouls. Never.”

Guardiola was asked if he thought comments such as Solskjaer’s could influence the referee.

“That’s the reason why, of course,” he said.
