‘A bag of nonsense’ – Simon Jordan responds to Laurence Bassini interview and still says takeover is bad news for Bolton

Simon Jordan has responded to talkSPORT’s exclusive interview with Laurence Bassini, and still believes his prospective takeover is not good news for Bolton.

In a rare chat with Jim White, Bassini laid out his plans for the Trotters if his purchase of the in-trouble club goes through and assured fans their beloved Bolton would be in good hands.

The businessman also called out former Crystal Palace owner Jordan, who said on talkSPORT earlier this week that Bassini is even worse than current owner Ken Anderson.

On Wednesday, Jordan told talkSPORT he knew Bassini from 2012, when they were in discussions over a potential deal to take over at Portsmouth.

During Friday’s interview, Bassini said Jordan ‘kept phoning me day after day, driving me mad’ about an offer to join him in business to purchase Pompey, and then ‘turned and got all funny on me’ after Bassini said no.

But, in response to the interview on Friday’s Jim White show, Jordan said that was ‘a bag of nonsense’.

He also reiterated his view that Anderson selling to Bassini would be ‘a carnival of horrors’ for Bolton.

“Listen, we spoke on Wednesday about him and I had some views and I don’t expect him not to have some views back on me,” said Jordan.

“My experiences with Laurence were – I got a phone call out of the blue back in 2012 because he had read my book, he announced himself as Laurence Bassini and I said, ‘…I have no idea who you are’.

“He talked about wanting to get me back in football, which I had no interest in whatsoever. Then he talked to me about Portsmouth, and I has certainly had no interest in getting involved with Laurence on any level, given what I spoke to him about, how he came across.

“I listen to him now and I still think he’s a bag of nonsense. His opinions are his own. The proof of the pudding with Laurence will be what he does when he goes into Bolton.

“It’s none of my business, but I’m being asked for a view on it.

“It’s a carnival of horrors as far as I’m concerned for Bolton fans, with Ken Anderson passing onto Laurence Bassini.

As I said on Wednesday, I’m not surprised Bassini has been kept in the background. He’s been wheeled out because it’s desperate stakes now with the courts looking at wind up orders and them delaying and delaying to get a deal across the line.

Bolton are in serious financial trouble

“He’ll either do what he says he will do, or he won’t.

“But listen, you’ve got to go some, mate, to get booted out of the football club and be disqualified from being a part of a football club for three years – these are not things that come along randomly.

“By the way, there’s nothing wrong with being bankrupt. That should not be held against him and if he’s come back and rebuilt himself then fair play to him. There’s nothing wrong with that at all.

“If he’s going to put his money where his mouth is and he’s going to have the best interests of the club in mind, that’s one thing.

“But my view is he’s not going there for the benefit of Bolton, he’s going there for the benefit of Laurence Bassini – as he did at Watford.

Bolton chairman Ken Anderson is eager to sell the club

Bolton chairman Ken Anderson is eager to sell the club

“If I was in Bolton’s shoes, I would take administration and a 12 point deduction rather than Bassini, with respect.

“But if he’s going to do a job at Bolton, you will see that over the fullness of time, and then guys like me can say: ‘You know what, I was wrong. The first time around I thought he was a buffoon, but the second time he’s not, he’s the real deal…’”

We’ll let you decide if he’s joking or not.

Bolton's match at home to Ipswich on Saturday is in doubt because of a 'critical' IT failure, the Championship club have announced. This is the latest setback for Wanderers who had been placed under prohibition notice by the region's safety advisory group (SAG) due to concerns over safety of the fans, however, that was lifted on Thursday before the new problem.

Christian Pulisic: Chelsea midfielder pictured at club’s training ground, but can he play in Europa League final?

Christian Pulisic visited Chelsea’s training ground on Monday after the end of the Bundesliga season.

Pulisic signed for the Blues in January but spent the remainder of 2018/19 on loan at Borussia Dortmund, helping them to a second place finish behind Bayern Munich.

BVB played their final match of the campaign on Saturday afternoon, with Pulisic grabbing an assist and later bidding farewell to his first club.

The 20-year-old faces a busy summer with the United States taking part in the Gold Cup, but Pulisic wasted no time in linking up with his new team-mates.

He was pictured at the Blues’ Cobham training ground on Monday to watch Maurizio Sarri’s side train, with Chelsea preparing for next week’s Europa League final.

But while Pulisic might have already linked up with Chelsea, there is no way he can play for them in the Europa League final.

For any player to appear in the Baku showpiece, they had to have been registered back in January when European squads were submitted to UEFA.

This means any of Chelsea’s returning loanees cannot play against Arsenal, although clubs are allowed to name youth players on their B list to include them in the final.

Everton 1-0 Arsenal: Gunners fail to tighten grip on place in Premier League top four

Arsenal missed the chance to rise to third in the Premier League after going down to a 1-0 defeat at Everton.

Toffees captain Phil Jagielka – who was not even in the team 30 minutes before kick-off – scored a scrappy goal in a tight encounter at Goodison Park.

Jagielka tapped the ball home after it deflected off Sead Kolasinac

After waiting more than two years for victory over a top-six club, Marco Silva’s side have now recorded two in as many home games, while a first league defeat in two months for Arsenal leaves their fourth-place vulnerable to Chelsea – level on points – who play West Ham on Monday.

Unai Emery’s side managed just two shots on target and the only surprise was that after going a 16th-consecutive top-flight away match without a clean sheet – for the first time since February 1985 – they did not concede more.

One goal should not have been enough to beat a team with this much talent but it was as Jagielka’s fourth appearance of the season – and his first at Goodison Park in 11 months proved to be a blessing in disguise.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header from Lucas Digne’s 10th-minute long throw was half-blocked but the ball dropped through the crowd to Jagielka who prodded home Everton’s 800th Premier League home goal from three yards.

The goal – and the home win over Chelsea last time out – gave Everton the confidence to take the game by the scruff of the neck.

They were helped, however, by their opponents’ inability to gain a foothold in midfield with Andre Gomes spraying passes at will and Idrissa Gana Gueye covering the hard yards.

Up front Calvert-Lewin’s incessant running has proved a handful for many centre-backs this season and his boundless energy was no different for Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi, both of whom struggled with his pace and aerial capability.

Calvert-Lewin gave the Arsenal defenders plenty to think about in the game

Calvert-Lewin gave the Arsenal defenders plenty to think about in the game

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford – who was disciplined in the week for his involvement in a bar fracas in the early hours of Monday – was put under little pressure but was keeping things simple none-the-less and his range kicking frequently picked out Calvert-Lewin or an advanced Digne.

Emery had to change things and he did so at half-time as he swapped Mohamed Elneny and Sead Kolasinac for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Aaron Ramsey in switching to a flat back four and two up front.

Pickford, a virtual spectator in the first half, failed his first challenge after the break when he came to punch Ramsey’s header but weakly returned the ball to the midfielder who wastefully volleyed over.

Ramsey missed a huge chance for Arsenal early in the second-half

3

Ramsey missed a huge chance for Arsenal early in the second-half

Ramsey had an effect in swinging the midfield balance back towards Arsenal but with wingers Bernard and Richarlison diligently tracking back, the spaces were just not there.

And with Calvert-Lewin continuing to win everything in the air, Arsenal were far from comfortable at the back, although Gylfi Sigurdsson, Richarlison and Bernard could all have put the match to bed in the final 20 minutes.

That they were allowed to get away with their misses showed just how toothless the Gunners were with Pickford not having to make a save in back-to-back home league victories for only the second time since October, put Everton back in the race for seventh place.

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Chelsea: Is this how Maurizio Sarri’s men could line-up in Europa League semi-final?

And they are looking to claim their second Europa League title, having emerged triumphant under Rafel Benitez in 2013.

Furthermore, although Chelsea are frontrunners for a top four spot in the Premier League, winning the competition will ensure the Blues qualify for Europe’s most elite tournament for next season.

Sarri’s side is not without its injury problems, however, Callum Hudson-Odoi has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a ruptured Achilles, while Antonio Rudiger’s season is over also after he injured his knee in the Man United clash at Old Trafford on the weekend.

Andreas Christensen is set to slot in for the German alongside David Luiz – the Dane has already started all 12 previous matches for the Blues in the competition.

Ahead of the game, Sarri insisted Chelsea must not take Frankfurt for granted in the match.

He said: “I respect Frankfurt. They have played against big teams and are a dynamic side with great intensity, and physically they have the same characteristics as [quarter-final opponents] Slavia Praha, but the quality is better, especially in attack. It will be difficult to get to the final.”

But how could they line-up? Have a look at our predicted team below.

Who is Moise Kean? Profile on the Juventus and Italy sensation

“I thank God, as it is a great joy for the whole family,” Biorou Jean Kean told Rai Radio 1 show Un Giorno Da Pecora before Italy’s win over Liechtenstein on Tuesday night.

“I won’t be at the stadium for tonight’s game with Liechtenstein, but I’ll watch it in the bar with my friends and cheer him on.

“Moise supported Inter as a kid, because he loved Obafemi Martins and kept pestering me for his shirt. He played for Torino, but I sent him to Juve, because I am a Bianconeri fan.

“I am very happy for him, even if I have a problem with the club Juventus. They won’t give me any more tickets to the stadium. I am separated with Moise’s mother and she, in the past, wanted to move the lad to England.

“I promised Juve that I’d keep him in Italy, but wanted two tractors in return. They said it wouldn’t be a problem, but I haven’t received them yet, now they won’t give me tickets or even take my calls.”

The striker’s parents separated when Moise and his brother Giovanni were young, so were essentially raised by their mother.

It’s therefore not clear how much contact Biorou Jean Kean really has with his famous son.

“Mario Balotelli is his favourite player now, even though I told him not to copy Balotelli in everything… I don’t have Italian citizenship yet, although I’ve been here for many years”, he added.

“I really like Matteo Salvini [deputy prime minister of Italy] and the Lega [Italian political party], so I am trying to help block new immigration to Italy.”

Tottenham Hotspur stadium: Daniel Levy claims 62,000-seater makes Spurs a ‘big club’ and capacity has ‘nothing to do with Arsenal’

Tottenham can officially call themselves a big club thanks to their new stadium, according to owner Daniel Levy.

The breathtaking 62,000-seater arena will finally open for the Premier League visit of Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.

It boasts the second-largest capacity in England’s top flight, behind Old Trafford and ahead of Arsenal’s Emirates – but Levy insists the club did not have their north London neighbours in mind.

“It’s nothing to do with Arsenal,” he said.

“All I can say is we wanted to build a stadium that had a minimum capacity of 60,000, and we managed to get it to 62,000.

“I don’t think you can be a big club in a 36,000-seater stadium,” Levy added.

“This is a 62,000-seater stadium – the second biggest in the UK – and I think our fans deserve it, and our players deserve to play in front of a big audience.

“I’m obviously proud, but I’m proud for all our fans. I think we’re delivering something which is great for them, great for our players, and it’s great for London. This is an iconic stadium.

“I take a long-term view. It’s very hard to be right at the top, but we are one of the biggest clubs in the world and we will continue growing. We want to be there and we want to win.”

Despite Levy’s lofty ambitions, Tottenham’s revolutionary new stadium arrives with the club in the middle of their worst run since Mauricio Pochettino took charge.

They have taken just one point from their last five league games, falling out of the title race and into a top-four scrap – and Levy hopes the stadium can lift the players to a strong finish.
